Benjamin Bunsold, Tenor

Hailed as “a marvelous tenor” by the New Jersey Star-Ledger, Benjamin Bunsold is distinguishing himself on the operatic stage. Recently, Benjamin performed the role of Fenton in Falstaff for Fort Worth Opera, Nemorino in L’Elisir d’amore for Opera in the Heights (Houston, TX), Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance for Opera New Jersey, and Alfredo in La traviata for Asheville Lyric Opera. Other roles include Laurie in Little Women, Il Duca in Rigoletto, Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte, Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, Alfred in Die Fledermaus, and Nico in Mark Adamo’s new opera, Lysistrata, in a concert/lecture presented by the composer with the Van Cliburn Foundations’ “Cliburn at the Modern” series in Fort Worth, TX. Most recent engagements for 2008 include Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor for Opera Company of North Carolina, Il Duca in Rigoletto with New Opera St. Louis, a return to Opera New Jersey where he will sing the role of Camille in The Merry Widow, and Laurie in Little Women for Opera Delaware. Upcoming engagements include Gastone in La traviata for Opera Memphis, Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte for Shreveport Opera, and a return to Opera Delaware to sing Alfred in Die Fledermaus.

Benjamin has participated in several Young Artist Programs including Utah Festival Opera where he sang Borsa in Rigoletto and Lieut. Shaw in The Secret Garden. Also, he has been a Resident Artist with Fort Worth Opera where he sang the Father Confessor and covered the Chevalier de la Force in Dialogues of the Carmelites, Gastone in La traviata, the Zweite Jude in Salome, and performed the role of Laurie in the company premiere of Little Women. In 2005, Benjamin debuted with the Glimmerglass Opera Young American Apprenticeship Program where he sang the role of American I in Death in Venice and covered Arthur in Lucie de Lammermoor. He returned to Glimmerglass Opera in 2006 to cover Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance and the Prussian Officer in the world premiere of The Greater Good. This past summer he was selected as a participant in Sherrill Milnes’ VOICExperience Training Program.

In addition to his operatic performances, Benjamin is an active concert soloist. Concert credits include Mozart’s Requiem and Missa Brevis, Haydn’s Creation and Lord Nelson Mass, Schubert’s Mass in e flat minor, Handel’s Messiah, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Dubois’ Seven Last Words of Christ, Stainer’s The Crucifixion and an appearance as featured vocalist for the Sinfonia da Camera directed by Ian Hobson. Additionally, he toured throughout the Midwest with the internationally known vocal coach John Wustman in the highly acclaimed “Franz Schubert Recital Series.” Past engagements include Mendelssohn's Elijah with the Utah Festival Orchestra, guest artist in the Kansas City Early Music Festival and Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra, tenor soloist in Handel’s Messiah for the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, and as a soloist in the National Endowment of the Arts, “Great American Voices” Concert Tour. Benjamin has received prizes from The Harold Haugh Vocal Competition, the Anna Sosenko Artist Assist Trust, NATS regional and state vocal competitions, and the Opera Columbus International Vocal Competition.

Benjamin is a native of Marysville, Ohio. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Ohio Wesleyan University and earned a Master of Music degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is a student of Inci Bashar.
